Search for RSS feeds to plumb into your pipe

"RSS isn't just news anymore, it's a resource able to give you the weather, sports scores, even search results. For instance, if you're interested in model trains you can enter model trains on many search engines and get an RSS feed that will track whenever new resources are added to the list (Digg is especially useful here).

"You can show the last few pictures you uploaded to Flickr, or the latest free books uploaded to Project Gutenberg. The list is pretty much endless. This revolution quite simply makes the entire Internet a resource you can draw on to improve your blog."

(Patrick Hunlock, 19/02/07)

Pipes make the uptake of RSS technology more mainstream and interactive mixing it up in a way that is only limited by human imagination.

Why's it called Pipes?
For the geeks among you, you might know that the term trickles from UNIX pipes, an input and output system of filter programming - hence the name.

Yahoo! Pipes simplifies RSS, allowing people who aren't programmers (but maybe slightly geeky) to find lots of data from a variety of sources, filter it and drop it into one place in a very user-friendly way. I just wish plumbing was this easy!

I tried to build a pipe to look for recipes containing Vodka, (it was a long day!)

Another attempt, once I got my spanner working, was something more sensible (and work-related) that pipes news items from various sources around the web on search engine and techie news.

Take a look at my Yahoo! Search Engine and Techie News Pipe!

I found the site slow, but being a bit of a geek I'll persevere as it's a really interesting tool to manage the Tsunami of content that can be found on the Internet.

So, tools at the ready, find out how can you tinker with the pipes:

  • Compare prices - Set a pipe up to track a particular product. Looking for an iPhone? Watching an item on eBay? Let Yahoo! Pipes do the hard work.
  • Translate news into English - Point a pipe at some news and then use Babel Fish as a filter to translate it. Useful for journalists, watching news about competitors or tracking European markets.
  • Trip planning - Yahoo! Pipes can be used to combine photographs, news and reviews from multiple sources to save you having to flit between multiple sites.
  • Event planning - Pipe information from Upcoming.org so you can list events that you are interested in attending, filter it by date, location and make it as sophisticated as you like.
  • Meal planning - See my vodka pipe! Or, build one with a list of ingredients, like this one I created where you can search by the main ingredient.

Can I plumb Pipes into my website or do I need a plumber?
There are guides available that will take you though making and adding a Yahoo! Pipe to your site, or you could get us to do it for you.

What will Yahoo! Pipes add to my site?
If you add a Pipe to your site or blog - you've already done some research for your visitors and it ultimately adds to the site's stickability.

Essentially, you can easily build an application in minutes that users of your site can use for more efficient searching.

Not only that, Pipes can allow you to tap into business news, research or information on your competitors so it's useful for making you more efficient too.

Use your imagination and see what Pipes you can design.
