The blogosphere is doubling in size every 5 and a half months.

Don't get blogged down with results
One of the things I mentioned last month was that good written content of posts is hugely important in having your blog found by Google, but what exactly is "good content"?

According to Copyblogger's Brian Clark, bloggers need to follow the path of Zen Buddhism in order to reach a state of true blogging enlightenment.

What this means is that you need to take a step back and consider what will appeal to readers. Blogging can often be too self-focusing, so you should strike a balance between your own interests and those of the reader.

Look at it this way. If you have a blog, the chances are you have it in order to engage better with your customers, thereby building trust and ultimately generating increased results and sales. However, if you concentrate too much on results, you might forget about providing valuable content; the whole reason people read your blog in the first place!

So, by not focusing on results, you will be more likely to actually get results. Make sense?

Meditate over these tips
Here are a few suggestions from our temple of tit-bits for engaging readers with quality content:

  • Take a step back and try to think of original ideas for posts. Don't shy away from being controversial and don't be afraid to embrace new ideas.
  • Make sure the blog is kept up-to-date with fresh, attention-grabbing headlines and posts.
  • Keep readers interested by providing interactive content, video clips and podcasts. New, interesting and stimulating features will keep people coming back. Try adding a Yahoo! Pipe, (link to pipes article) for instance.

Content is king and Kate Moss is queen
Why not employ a guest blogger? Topshop managed to drag Kate Moss away from the wild life long enough to be guest designer and celebrity blogger/podcaster for their new line.

Kate was reportedly paid a not-to-be-sniffed-at £3m. Despite her actual contribution to the Topshop blog appearing fairly minimal (or non-existent), her overall presence has been a shot in the arm for the brand's popularity.

However, you don't have to choose someone famous; an industry expert or anyone else with a nose for a story can help provide razor-sharp content.

If you want to keep people visiting your blog, you need to give them something to get them hooked. Useful, relevant, optimised and user-friendly content will not only endear you to readers, but also the blog search engines.
