A study by Neilson Net Ratings showed that in April 06, MSN powered 13.2% of all searches, making it the third top global search engine.

82 million people, or 49% of the European online population, used INSTANT MESSAGING applications to communicate online in February. Comscore, 2006

One in five Britons (5.4 million) online in June 2006 were under 18 years of age.

More Targeted Advertising

At MediaCo we use Google AdWords, Miva and Yahoo! Search Marketing (formerly Overture) and Microsoft Adcenter to set out Pay Per Click promotions for our clients.

MSN used to fuel their sponsored links from Yahoo!, but has broken away with Microsoft Adcenter which they have been testing in the UK since June and have launched officially this month.

The folks at Google might be worried by Microsoft's entry into the market, as the level of targeting means that they have a slight edge over other PPC providers.

But, from your point of view, it's a good thing as it means that you have more tools and choice at your disposal to advertise online.

The best approach to online advertising with PPC is to spread activity across more than one provider (eg Microsoft, Google, Yahoo!) and measure the results.

Here's what Microsoft have to say about Adcenter:

"…We're giving customers improved audience intelligence, increased conversion rates, and great customer service."

How can Microsoft target customers?
You might be wondering how Microsoft can offer such an enlightened approach to advertising.

Well there's no supernatural strategy behind it. Microsoft is leading an investigation into search engine user behaviour. This, coupled with knowledge of Internet habits gained from email and Instant Messaging accounts, allows the company to understand the market and target customers for you.

With around one fifth of the online population believed to be under 18 and shopping online on the increase, the importance of targeted adverts is obvious.

The benefits of the new service to you:

  • Similar Cost Per Click to Yahoo
  • Targeted adverts
  • Integration with other Microsoft services like MSN Messenger and Windows Live

I recommend that you use an experienced Pay Per Click professional to build your advertising campaign, so that you can make your budget go further whilst ensuring that you use a wide variety of channels.
