Use Google's Blog search

Find out more about blogging for business.

Give Google good content
Among the many factors Google takes into account when ranking a blog, three content-related factors stand out as significant:

  • Written content of recent posts - Providing useful, relevant, user-friendly content is always going to be favoured in the eyes of the search engines. Text can be 'lightly' optimised using specific keyphrases. Avoid 'spamming' techniques, such as over-use of keyphrases and posting too frequently.
  • Blogroll - This is a list of links to other blogs, usually found in a sidebar. Having a good range of links, as well as being linked to by other blogs (particularly quality ones) is hugely important.
  • Metadata - Source code providing information about the blog and its owner. This can also be optimised with specially-targeted keyphrases.

What it is to be popular
So, how popular do you think you are with your customers and other bloggers? The popularity of your blog can go a long way to determining how Google will rank it. For example, an 'implied' popularity can be gauged by the number of times your blog is clicked on ahead of others in the search results.

This shows your blog is well-known and popular. Therefore, to Google, a good reputation means your blog is important and will likely be ranked higher over time.

Ping Google when your blog is updated
You can keep Google up-to-date with changes to your blog, using the Google Blog Search Pinging Service.

This ensures the very latest version of your blog can be found and ranked by Google.

Some blogging providers automatically 'ping' Google when blogs are updated, so you should check with them first. If your provider doesn't ping Google with updates, you can either set up a program which does it automatically or do it manually yourself each time.
