Searching for Trends

Google have released a unique tool called "Google Trends" that could mean marketers get an added insight into what their customers are interested in and where they are.

www.google.com/trends

I searched the phrase "big brother" and, whilst you would think that most searches would be from the UK, the top location for this phrase was "Zagreb" (in Croatia) with Edinburgh following a close second.

There are some doubts as to the accuracy of the results, as Google Trends uses historical search data. But, despite this, it might help you understand your customers search behaviour.

Useful searches:

  • Compare brands (pepsi, coke)
  • Compare products (mp3, ipod)
  • Use the tool to research keyword popularity (cheap cars, wholesale cars, value cars)

As the search giant strives to make information more reliable and easier to find, you should be doing all you can to make sure that the information, services and products you have to offer can be easily found.

Feed Google Spiders Fresh Meat ...

Draw Google a sitemap of your site and the spiders will follow!

Google's little spiders have a lot of work to do crawling round the internet and sometimes they get tired. Make it easy for spiders to find your site by generating a sitemap especially to increase your site's performance.

Benefits:

  • Google finds and indexes your site quicker
  • Gives extra information to Google about your site
  • Deeper information about how often your site is updated
  • Good for dynamic or content not readily visible to Google
  • Helps increase your visibility in Google so your customers find you quicker

Spiders refer to the technology Google and other search engines use to follow links across the internet and on your site. Google and other search engines crawl the "web" looking for new content to read and index so that the best results can be delivered to those seeking information.

If your site is frequently updated then it's a good idea to give Google this information. You can indicate this to Google with the Google Sitemap programme.
