TV advertising is expected to rise from a predicted £3.4bn in 2006 to a mere £3.43bn in 2007, internet advertising is expected to increase from £1.61bn to £2.2bn over the same period, and will represent 18% of media investment in 2007.

Changes in advertising

Google is predicted to make £900m in advertising revenue this year, compared to Channel 4 Group's anticipated £800m.

Speaking to the Financial Times, Andy Duncan, CEO of Channel 4, has called for others to take the issue seriously and is reported to have remarked that the changes in advertising spend are more than just a temporary change.

The fact that leading TV executives are aware of the changes highlights the issue further. Google's recent purchase of YouTube and collaboration with MySpace on search and advertising should have TV companies rushing to draw up counter-measures to cash in.

For advertisers, the changes will lead to more targeted, measurable and cost effective advertising.

TV and the internet are increasingly converging. If television companies become more involved then advertising online will become more competitive and on the sliding scale of economy = cheaper.
